  • What is a Labor Market Impact Assessment?

A Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that a Canadian employer may need to obtain before hiring a foreign worker. A positive LMIA demonstrates that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job and that the Canadian worker could not be hired for the job, despite attempts to do so. A positive LMIA is sometimes referred to as a “confirmation letter”.

If the employer is required to get an LMIA, they need to apply for one.

After the employer gets the LMIA, the worker can apply for a Work Permit.

To apply for a Work Permit you will need:

    • Written job offer
    • A contract
    • A copy of the LMIA
    • The LMIA number
